The Nutcracker is Tchaikovsky's third ballet, after Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Its first performance was on December 18 of 1892 at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre. It is based on The Story of the Nutcracker by Alexandre Dumas, an adaptation of E.T.A Hoffman's The Nutcracker and The Mouse King.
Since the 1960s, The Nutcracker has been danced by countless ballet companies, especially in North America, and has become a beloved holiday tradition. The well-known music from The Nutcracker is used in many films and in television.
